Start a duel

Stand near the friend you want to challenge and use the direct player-interaction prompt—the same interaction used to open Trade. Select Duel and wait for the other player to accept. This is a consensual Realm activity, not an invasion or public matchmaking mode.

Patch 1 allows duels anywhere in Isola Sacra. The chosen location can include terrain, traps, hazards, or enemies, so agree on the arena before accepting.

How a duel ends

The loser is decided when their Health reaches zero or when one player leaves the duel boundary. After the duel, Health is restored and equipment does not lose durability from the duel result.

That restoration is not permission to ignore the world around the arena. A hazard or enemy can still complicate the fight, and leaving the boundary counts as a loss even if it was accidental.

Hotfix 8 changes

Hotfix 8 made three current Duel changes:

  • Players can be backstabbed during duels.
  • Poise-break lasts slightly longer in duels.
  • Each player has a visible poise meter.

Build and spacing advice from the initial Patch 1 launch should include those changes. A heavy build must protect its back, and a fast build can use the poise meter to decide when pressure is likely to convert into a larger opening.

Set fair test rules

For a useful build comparison, agree on:

  • Arena and boundary.
  • Whether world hazards and enemies are allowed.
  • Food, oils, utility runes, and Comfort buffs.
  • Gear level and Exalting state.
  • Best-of-one or a longer set.
  • Whether both players reset equipment between rounds.

Without these controls, a duel is still fun but not evidence that one weapon family is universally better.

Duel etiquette

Use Text Chat to confirm readiness. Do not start during inventory management, a quest interaction, or a shared loot decision. Move away from one-time quest items and expensive environmental hazards. After the round, trade back any test equipment before leaving.

Build lessons from duels

Duels expose recovery, predictable rune wind-ups, stamina overcommitment, and weak close-range answers quickly. They do not replace PvE testing: enemy poise, group pressure, boss phases, and resource pacing are different.

Use a duel to identify a weakness, then test the repair in the encounter the build is meant to clear. Return to Builds for the PvE loop and Realm Difficulty for controlled world testing.
