Current answer
Torn Sinew is an upgrade material associated with plagued, Torn enemies and Pestilence content. Its Build 22928553 description says the remnant can be used to upgrade gear or craft an Effigy. That current description is stronger evidence than a guide that claims the material is only an Exalting currency.
If Pestilence Outbreaks are not unlocked in the Realm, do not spend hours farming normal wildlife or ordinary early zones. The relevant source loop appears with Pestilence progression.
Reliable source types
Current live-build references consistently point to:
- Enemies and bosses inside active Pestilence Outbreaks.
- Outbreak completion rewards and related chests.
- The Watcher's rotating or progression-dependent material inventory.
- Endgame activities where Torn materials can appear as secondary rewards.
Exact drop chance is not published here. Realm difficulty, outbreak modifiers, progression, and RNG make a single claimed percentage misleading without a controlled current test.
A low-waste farming loop
- Confirm the map area is under an active Pestilence Outbreak.
- Empty enough inventory space for materials and gear.
- Bring a build that can finish the outbreak boss, not only clear ordinary enemies.
- Sweep the area once, then complete the major objective and reward path.
- Record Sinew spent on an Effigy or outbreak setup separately from Sinew earned.
- Compare net gain across several runs before calling the route profitable.
Do not burn the last Sinew stack merely because a community route assumes a positive return. Keep a reserve for the gear upgrade or Effigy you actually need.
Torn Sinew versus similar materials
Build 22928553 also contains Hollowborn Sinew, whose description identifies a different creature-material family used for crafting or upgrading gear. Search the Materials database by the full name. “Sinew” alone is not enough for a recipe or route.
When to spend it
Upgrade the item only after its base, facet, requirements, and movement-class impact have been tested. Craft an Effigy when the planned Pestilence run can exploit the resulting content and the group agrees on the cost. In co-op, announce the spend before consuming a shared stock.
For the final gear workflow, read Crafting and Exalting. For currency-based enchantment modification, use the separate Embers guide.
